The Nijkerker bridge (est. 1965) proved to have insufficient structural capacity to carry the current traffic loads. A contemporary way of collaboration between Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch Highway Agency) and private parties was introduced for this project. After the design phase, renovation of the bridge was chosen instead of demolition and construction of a new bridge. Due to the collaboration between the parties involved, an optimal solution was found to increase the lifespan of the bridge by the demanded 30 years and minimize the traffic hindrance during the renovation of the bridge.
